What does it even mean to be an individual these days? Since I was a child having my own sense of personal style has always been really important to me. I like to think I got this from my mother, she was never really one to follow the lead of others and I always remember her telling me how my grandmother would make her dresses from old curtains (I know, how very Von Trapp) just so she wouldn’t be wearing the same as anyone else. Luckily my family never tried to make me anything out of curtains but I do think the attitude rubbed off on me somewhat.

Is something you hear a lot it seems especially from men but surely whatever you decide to wear each morning regardless of how much thought you give it is fashion? Sure it might not be ‘fashionable’ but it is fashion, it’s your fashion and your personal style. That t-shirt you bought was a conscious choice, you didn’t just walk into the store with your eyes closed and buy the first thing you tripped over. You made a fashion choice, admit it and move on – it won’t make you less of a man, in fact it might make life much more interesting.
So, while you’re here making fashion choices why not go the extra mile and let your amazing personality really show though on the outside. It really isn’t difficult.
Don’t dress exactly like your peers. Why would you want to go for a night out dressed exactly the same as your group of friends? Sure it’s easier to just wear whatever they are wearing, maybe in a slightly different shade or cut but don’t take the easy road. Surely you want to get noticed? It’s easy to stand out just enough, in basic terms if they’re all wearing jeans make sure you wear trousers & if they’re all in t-shirts make sure you’re the one in a shirt.
People generally will make their mind up about you within the first 30 seconds of meeting, make that 30 seconds count. It’s those first impressions that make a big impact on what happens next with the encounter so try to reflect your personality in what you’re wearing as well as what you say, the best thing you can be wearing however is a smile so think of it as your best new accessory.
In the same way writers use words to express a character and tell a story use accessories to show small aspects of your own character, a simple bow tie or a watch really can make the difference between a good outfit and a great one. Don’t be a blank page, be an entire story.
The most important thing about personal individual style however is remembering that no one else can be who you are, even if you turn up to a party wearing the same outfit as someone else don’t panic or rush how to change just remember they really can’t ‘do’ it the way you do. Staying true to yourself, your style, and your personality is the easiest way to always have your individuality shine through. There’s only one of you and you are amazing so remember to never hide who you are!
